Give Heartburn The Heave-Ho: Tips For Easing Discomfort

I developed intense heartburn during my second pregnancy. I tried every pregnancy-safe home remedy I could find and nothing seemed to work. I was hopeful that once my daughter was born, it would improve. When it didn't, I spent a lot of time working with an internal medicine specialist and researching remedies online. I've found many different things that help in different ways. I decided to create this site to document the solutions that I've found and help others to find a way to manage their chronic heartburn as well. If you're struggling with persistent heartburn, I hope this information helps you find relief.

Getting Older? 2 Health Screenings You Should Have

Health & Medical Blog

If you are getting older you need to be careful with your health. One way to help with this is to have health screenings done. There are different types of these screenings, two of which are listed below.

Colon Cancer Screening

Ask your doctor when you should start colon cancer screening. This is especially important if you have anyone in your family that has had colon cancer as this may increase your chances of getting it. Finding cancer early can increase your chances of surviving.

The screening test is done when you do not have any symptoms. There are different types of screenings that can be done. A colonoscopy is what many doctors suggest. You may be put under anesthesia or given medication through an IV that makes you drowsy. The actual test takes around an hour or less to perform. During the test, the doctor looks for polyps or any abnormal growths on your colon. If any are found, they will be removed and biopsied to make sure they are not cancerous.

If you have no colon cancer in your family the doctor may suggest a different kind of test. With this, you will give the doctor a sample of your stool and they will send the sample to a lab to look for cancer cells.

Mammograms

Mammograms can be done on both women and men. This screening looks for cancer in the breasts. You should have a screening when you are healthy so the doctor can compare results. For example, if there is anything abnormal on the test the doctor will compare this test to the first mammogram you had done before you experienced symptoms or abnormalities.

Breast cancer is treatable especially when discovered early. If not found early, you may need to have a breast removed and the cancer can spread to other areas of your body. Mammograms are not very painful and can be done on the same day the test is ordered. The test generally does not take long, and you can go home immediately after the test is over. Your doctor will get the results in a few weeks in most cases. Your doctor can tell you when you should start getting mammograms and how often you should go.

Talk with your doctor about other types of health screenings, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, and cervical cancer screenings. Your doctor can also give you information on how these screenings work in much more detail.
