Warning Signs That You Might Need A Sleep Study

Sleep is so important. Without it, you don't have the energy to get through the day. Unfortunately, sometimes knowing you need sleep is not enough. Maybe you struggle to fall asleep, or perhaps you wake up periodically throughout the night and never quite feel rested upon waking. Most people struggle with sleep now and then when they are stressed out or sick, but sometimes, sleep problems are signs of a bigger issue that should be diagnosed via a sleep study. What are some of the warning signs that you may need a sleep study? Take a look.

1. You can't fall asleep even with good sleep hygiene

If you are having trouble falling asleep, experts often recommend keeping your room a bit cooler, staying away from screens for an hour before bed, and making sure your sleeping space is quiet. If you can't fall asleep even in spite of taking these precautions, however, that is a red flag and a sign you should likely enroll in a sleep study.

2. You feel like you need to constantly move

When you're lying there trying to fall asleep, do you constantly feel as though you need to move your legs? Some people also feel like they need to move their arms. This syndrome is called restless leg syndrome, and it is often a sign of an underlying neurological condition, which your doctor can diagnose while observing and monitoring you during a sleep study.

3. You're having regular nightmares

Most people have bad dreams now and then. Sometimes kids go through a period of having bad dreams night after night. But adults do not normally have a series of bad dreams, night after night, without an underlying explanation. You may have a hormone imbalance, or you may be having a reaction to a medication you're taking. A sleep study should reveal what's amiss.

4. You sleepwalk or engage in other behaviors while asleep

Sleepwalking is often a sign of an underlying sleep disorder. So is performing any other behavior while being asleep and unaware. If your partner or a family member has ever found you eating, watching TV, or even grooming yourself while asleep, this is a sign you should enroll in a sleep study.

Keep in mind that sleep studies are not scary. Basically, you'll be sleeping in a comfortable room while your doctor monitors your sleep by observing your heart rate, brain activity, and other functions. If you've noticed any of the signs above, you should have a sleep study done sooner rather than later.
