Migraines are actually considered a disorder of the nervous system that cause intense pain, usually described as throbbing. While there is no known cause for migraines, some medical professionals believe it has something to do with an imbalance of certain hormones, such as serotonin and estrogen. Some people who get migraines are able to pinpoint certain things that trigger their migraines, including eating certain foods, changes in air pressure, lack of sleep, and increased stress levels.

Some of the most common symptoms of migraines include:

  • Increased sensitivity to sound and light
  • Feeling nauseous
  • Feeling lightheaded or dizzy
  • Having difficulties speaking

Vomiting can also be common with migraines. Some people experience an aura, or temporary loss of vision, before the actual migraine begins. In most case, the aura lasts for about 20 minutes, but can last up to one hour.

People who get migraines find them to be debilitating and are not able to work or do every day activities while they are experiencing a migraine. Besides being debilitating, there are times when a migraine causes so much pain and misery that it may warrant a trip to the urgent care clinic.
